As the largest student-led energy conference in the US, the MIT Energy Conference has become a premier event to connect professionals, policymakers, academics, and students in the energy industry. More changes have occurred in the global energy sector in the past decade than in the 100 years prior. In its 12th edition, the MIT Energy Conference main theme is centered on the interconnection between activities, technologies, and geographies, addressing the idea that small, distributed impacts can generate big solutions.  (1) IAP Course: IDS.S31 Decision Support Models for Low-Carbon Electric Power Systems

DATES: 9 sessions: January 17 to 20 and 23 to 27; 10am - 12.30pm and 2pm - 4.30pm. OVERVIEW: This 9-session, 6-credit, intensive course held by Professors from Comillas University and MIT presents power system analysis techniques that will help in modeling and understanding the role of electric power systems in a carbon-constrained economy. The massive deployment of intermittent renewables, the anticipated surge of active demand response or the development of smart grids are among the challenges that have to be faced by the mathematical models for optimization, analysis and simulation of the complex decision making processes in power systems. Apart from a theoretical description of the models, the instructors will provide the students with a collection of prototypes that will allow them to run study cases and to understand the effect of the different mathematical formulations on the outcomes. The use of these models in some real-world applications will also be presented. Enrollment is limited to 30.  (2) IAP Course: 12.095 Delivering Energy at Scale: Science, Technology, and Sustainable Development (New)

The class is for 4 days. Tuesday - Friday, January 17 - 20, 1 - 5 pm, in the Green Building, 54-517. For the first 2-1/2 sessions we take the students through the technologies of the upstream business - exploration geology and geophysics, drilling, petrophysics, reservoir engineering and production technology. To illustrate the business we use real data from a major frontier natural gas discovery and in the last day and a half the students break into teams and put together a notional development plan for the field. In addition to the technology, we place the field in a fictitious country with a new government, a benevolent dictatorship of sorts, and keep tossing different real life problems into the mix that impact the potential development, including environmental and social issues. Rich Sears co-teaches the class with another Shell retiree. They each have 40+ years experience in the business so are able to address many aspects of the business and answer questions you might have. Rich was initially a geophysicist and retired from Shell in 2009 as a senior executive. The other instructor, David Murphy is a petrophysicist and since retiring from Shell, he teaches industry courses through PetroSkills.

 (3) Climate Preparedness in Massachusetts: How Systems Thinking Will Drive Technology and Policy (New)

By the end of this century, the coast of Massachusetts is expected to witness a sea level rise between two and six feet. And superstorms are expected to become more frequent and more powerful. This will create an urgent need for society to respond in new and creative ways. Policy makers and technologists will need to take a broad and systems-based approach to energy policy - including resiliency, efficiency, grid infrastructure and urban design. Adaptation will be necessary, but will itself not be sufficient. Further carbon reduction strategies - especially renewable and energy efficiency - will also be necessary. Join us for a dive into the: Policies that will shape Massachusetts' strategy for future resiliency; Big data tools and models that will help us cope; and Private sector responses and technologies that will enable us to accelerate and expand our emerging energy economy, while simultaneously adapting to the changing climate.

 (4) LEED GA Workshop at MIT

Interested in getting involved in the Green Building Industry? Opportunities are plentiful in the field of sustainable design and LEED is at its forefront. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is simply a green-rating point system, or a scorecard. To date, this course and its materials have proven to be instrumental in helping over 6000 students pass their respective exam at a 100% pass rate. This course is offered at a quarter of the price and time as the competition and is geared at allowing students to graduate with letters after their name! Just as Buildings can be LEED certified, people can become LEED Professionals. The LEED Green Associate (GA) credential is the only entry level sustainability designation and shows employers you have the knowledge now required in many jobs. A new LEED rating system (v4) was introduced last month and this training course is one of the few that has been updated to teach the current rating system. This course meets the exam's eligibility requirements and the USGBC charges a $100 (reduced for students) fee for the actual exam which can be taken at any time at your nearest Prometric center. ESI and Conservation International are teaming up for this year's Hackathon for Climate, where minds from across MIT come together to brainstorm, propose, and develop nature-based solutions to climate change. Teams can choose to problem-solve in one of three themes: (1) Hacking the material world: minerals and the environmental consequences of extraction, acquisition, processing and distribution; (2) Hacking the digital world: environmental implications of digital things including data centers and the generation, storage, distribution, and consumption of information; and (3) Open track: for that groundbreaking idea you've been waiting to explore!

 (7) MIT Solve's Request for Fuel Challenge Proposals

The Solve program is actively seeking proposals for Fuel challenges centered around carbon pricing and negative carbon emissions. The Solve program is organized around four "pillars": Fuel, Learn, Cure, and Make. This year's program poses three "challenges" within those pillars. Of particular note to the sustainability community are the Fuel challenges: 1) Carbon price: How can new technologies (including digital currencies like Bitcoin) be used to put a price on emissions of carbon and other greenhouse gases? 2) Negative carbon emissions: How do we remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in a way that is scalable, economical, and ethical? What can you do right now? Solve encourages you to log in to the Solve CoLab platform (http://solvecolab.mit.edu) to propose solutions. A distinguished panel of judges will select semifinalists who will present their solutions at the Solve at HUBweek event, September 27 and 28, 2016. Registration for the Solve at HUBweek events is now open at www.hubweek.org.

The 2017 ARPA-E Energy innovation Summit is hosting an ideas pitching competition in partnership with Shell GameChangers. The program is seeking applicants who have a novel, provable and impactful idea related to energy. Six finalists will be selected to pitch their concept to a three-person panel of judges on Day 1 of the Summit. Each finalist will have 8 minutes to pitch.  (2) Bright Minds Challenge: Renewable Energy Revolution (New)

The Bright Minds Challenge is an international competition designed to help accelerate the scaling of solutions for 100% renewable energy in the solar and energy storage sectors. The challenge is designed to support scientists and researchers around the world overcome barriers they face in scaling up their ideas and solutions. The top three solutions will all receive commercial, technical and mentoring support, with the winner receiving a $100,000 equivalency of 500 hours of tailored help to fast-forward their solution.

The CleanTech Challenge, organized by London Business School and University College London, is a global business plan competition for innovative clean technology business ideas. The Columbia Energy Symposium is one of the largest events of its kind, bringing together in New York City more than 300 students, faculty, leaders, and executives representing industry, government, and society, to explore and advance our insights into today's challenging energy questions. The event features a full-day conference, a student case competition, a career fair, and a venture showcase. This year's Symposium theme is "disruptive innovation: the new status quo?." From the entrance of solar and now battery storage, to the evolving utility business models, to the shifting geopolitics of petroleum, each year there seems to be some new disruptive force on the traditional energy industry. The CU Energy Symposium's conference will examine ways that these new technologies, business models, and innovative financing strategies are impacting the traditional energy system and how energy experts think this disruption will evolve the industry in the years to come.

The Harvard University Center for the Environment awards two-year postdoctoral fellowships to outstanding young scholars in any environment-related discipline. The goal of the program is to create a community of interdisciplinary researchers-working alongside Harvard faculty hosts-to tackle our most compelling environmental challenges. Program alumni are currently working at universities like Harvard, Yale, Berkeley, MIT, Stanford, and the University of Michigan. Other former Fellows are working at research institutes around the world and in new energy start-ups. The Center will award approximately six two-year postdoctoral fellowships this coming spring for an award to start in September 2017. The application deadline is January 18, 2017. The Center asks applicants to propose a research program and to secure a commitment from one or more Harvard faculty members to host their work. Hosts provide office or lab space as well as mentoring, and the Center will handle the rest of the administrative responsibilities.

The Lemelson-MIT Program provides grants of $10,000 to teams of high school students around the country to conceptualize, design, and build their own inventions through our InvenTeams initiative. One of our grantees this year from Southern California is developing a temporary shelter to serve the homeless population in LA. The team of girls is affiliated with DIY Girls (started by MIT alums) and San Fernando HS: http://lemelson.mit.edu/teams/inventeam/24. As part of their chosen problem, the girls would like to integrate solar-powered cell phone charge and lighting. Is there anyone in the club who might be willing to Skype with them a few times over the course of the school year year to provide technical guidance and feedback in this area? They are just getting started and have until June to complete their working prototype. Each team brings their working prototype to showcase at MIT the third weekend in June.
